Would it be worth a slight rerouting of our trip in order to visit white sands np?
I did a cross country national parks road trip last summer and white sands was easily in my top 5 parks, the landscape is so dynamic as the light changes and hiking it feels otherworldly.

Just returned from an incredible visit to white sands national park. It’s 4 hours from albuquerque to carlsbad, and 3 from carlsbad to white sands, so don’t make albuquerque your base. So i plan to stay in santa fe, nm in may for two weeks. Alamogordo has some cool museums.
White sands national park my boyfriend and i were wanting to take a trip out to new mexico for the white sands national park but i noticed a lot of it is closed off due to that plane crash.
Beyond that there are picnic areas and tons of sand boarding. The drive between el paso and white sands is over an hour, 3 hours between white sands and carlsbad and then 2 hours between there and el paso. White sands and the surrounding area has places that can be worth a couple days of exploring imo. Planning a road trip through the southwest this summer.
