Alamogordo has some cool museums. Beyond that there are picnic areas and tons of sand boarding. I embarked on the alkali trail early in the morning, and it was absolutely breathtaking.

Planning a road trip through the southwest this summer.
Visiting white sands national park. The pure white sand dunes were stunningly. I did a cross country national parks road trip last summer and white sands was easily in my top 5 parks, the landscape is so dynamic as the light changes and hiking it feels otherworldly. Carlsbad caverns, in my opinion, will take.
Once you leave albuquerque, you’ll want to stay in carlsbad for that. I live in the northwest and can work remotely until later this year so want to take this. Cj’s si señor has great mexican food. So i plan to stay in santa fe, nm in may for two weeks.
It’s 4 hours from albuquerque to carlsbad, and 3 from carlsbad to white sands, so don’t make albuquerque your base.
Would it be worth a slight rerouting of our trip in order to visit white sands np? Because it’s a national park, dune buggies are not permitted at white sands. Just returned from an incredible visit to white sands national park. The drive between el paso and white sands is over an hour, 3 hours between white sands and carlsbad and then 2 hours between there and el paso.
