Because it’s a national park, dune buggies are not permitted at white sands. Beyond that there are picnic areas and tons of sand boarding. Alamogordo has some cool museums.

The drive between el paso and white sands is over an hour, 3 hours between white sands and carlsbad and then 2 hours between there and el paso. I embarked on the alkali trail early in the morning, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The pure white sand dunes were stunningly. I live in the northwest and can work remotely until later this year so want to take this.
So i plan to stay in santa fe, nm in may for two weeks. White sands and the surrounding area has places that can be worth a couple days of exploring imo. I did a cross country national parks road trip last summer and white sands was easily in my top 5 parks, the landscape is so dynamic as the light changes and hiking it feels otherworldly. Planning a road trip through the southwest this summer.
Carlsbad caverns, in my opinion, will take.
Once you leave albuquerque, you’ll want to stay in carlsbad for that. Would it be worth a slight rerouting of our trip in order to visit white sands np? It’s 4 hours from albuquerque to carlsbad, and 3 from carlsbad to white sands, so don’t make albuquerque your base. I need help deciding if.
